![]() Ms. Amanda Dillingham and Vertex were featured on Eastie's website! Read on: The sound of laughter erupts in the Thomas M. Menino Vertex Learning Lab as Ms. Dillingham’s Science Fair students from East Boston High School stream in to put the finishing touches on their science fair projects. They’re part of the Science Fair Mentorship Program, one of a number of Vertex’s science education initiatives available for students in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) system, primarily East Boston High and Boston Green Academy. “It’s a place where students can come in and have an opportunity to do cutting-edge modern science that’s directly correlated with their school curriculum,” said Carl Reid, Ph.D., who heads up the lab and is also an adjunct professor of microbiology at Roxbury Community College, of the 3,000 square-foot facility. “It’s really inspiring,” said Karen, director of Clinical Operations, who has met weekly with her mentees since early October and has been continually impressed by their enthusiasm and skill. “I feel very proud of them, and I feel proud to be a part of getting them to the next level.” The goal of the program is to inspire scientific inquiry and encourage students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. “Everybody who likes science and who doesn’t know exactly what they want to do should come to Vertex,” said Steven Toro, currently a junior at EBHS, who became involved with the Learning Lab as a summer intern through Mayor Walsh’s Summer Jobs Program. He has worked with scientists in the lab, and has learned plenty about how the company operates. “Every single section of Vertex revolves around science,” He noted.
