Quick update from Ms. Stacy-Michelle Reid's AP Environmental Science class - we got our first sprouts today! One plant on the D side is up, and 3 others are just above the dirt on both sides.
The seeds were labeled D or F - one stayed on earth, and the other went on a journey to outer space! We don't know which is which, so we are not sure which one sprouted first. We will find out once we send our data to the Tomatosphere Project. In between the two sets of tomatoes, we've started some organic catnip as well. These will also be available for sharing once they are sprouted (a bunch of those have come up!).

Two EBHS students graduated tonight from the High School Apprenticeship Challenge through MIT/Novartis/BioBuilder, and received their awards!
In attendance to congratulate them were the Mayor of Cambridge, CEO of MLSC, future employers, and the scientist to first clone insulin!! We could not have been more proud of them. OUR STUDENTS ROCK!!!! What? SPACE? Yup!
Today Eastie's AP Environmental Science class, led by Ms. Stacy-Michelle Reid, sowed a small set of tomato seeds. Half of the seeds are regular ol' Heinz Tomato seeds. The other half are Heinz Tomato seeds that have spent 5 weeks in outer space aboard the International Space Station! The goal is to see if outer space conditions (-80C and a vacuum) will change the germination rates. Currently, we don't know which set is actually from space! We will send out our findings once they germinate (in a week or so). After, we will have some baby tomato seedlings for any aspiring gardeners out there. How cool would that be? Tomatoes from space! A huge THANK YOU to the New England Aquarium and the Zephyr Education Foundation for taking us on a 2 hour Science Cruise on May 14th! We were able to use an underwater video camera to see the harbor floor, a plankton net to capture plankton, temperature probes to measure temperature at different depths and use a net to look at marine organisms galore! We had the best time and learned a tremendous about Marine life in the harbor! ![]() Senior James Magnasco Was Awarded A$20,000.00 Scholarship To UMass Lowell For His First Place Science Fair Showing! A note from EBHS Science Director, Ms. Theresa O'Neill: On behalf of the Science Department, I want to share with you some great news about one of our seniors, James Magnasco. James received several awards and recognition for his science project on Physics and Muscles in which he invented a device that can function as an artificial muscle. To date, James has received the following impressive honors and awards: · A $20,000 Scholarship From University Of Massachusetts, Lowell · The Frederick P. Fish US Patent Award With A $12,000 Scholarship · Massachusetts 2016 State Science Fair Overall Honorable Mention He is among 21 students from Massachusetts selected to go to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona to be held from May 9th through 13th. James presents his award winning project on May 11th. We wish him all the best. I also want to give special thanks and recognition to Science Dept. Staff Member Mr. John Menkens, who supervised and chaperoned the entire 2 day event and ensured that all of our students arrived home safely. I thank all faculty who attended the Science Fair. Your presence and continuing support of our students and program is valued and greatly appreciated. |
