School is out for the summer, but students in Ms. Denise Puopolo's class are still learning. In a partnership with Tufts, these students are learning about different antiviral drugs.

EBHS students and teachers participated in a week of training and orientation at St. Michaels College in Colchester, Vermont with the Center organized by Vermont EPSCoR (The U.S. Department of Energy's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research). During the week, they learned about stream ecology and climate change. They learned about how to collect water samples from streams for analysis, conduct a stream evaluation and site assessment, and collect and identify macroinvertibrates from streams. They also worked on brainstorming some possible research questions to ask about streams in Boston. They will be embarking on a year-long project to collect and analyze data in order to answer their research question of choice. They will return to Vermont to present our research project at the annual EPSCoR research symposium. The biology teachers from Eastie took a field trip to Harvard today to be trained in the PTC PCR lab with Alia. The lab is funded by the Amgen Biotech Experience. Teachers from AP Biology, honors biology, regular biology, SEI biology, SpEd biology, special topics, and our biotech pathway were all represented. We can't wait to try the lab with our students! Our biology students went to the Umana for STEM Clean energy day! They worked nonstop with the entire 4th grade to help ensure program success today.
We want to give an incredibly huge shout out to our students who not only mentored in science, but acted as translators FOR THE ENTIRE PROGRAM for their groups of students so that Spanish speaking students could be included and participate today as well. One student even had the gumption to introduce himself and network with the Secretary of Energy of Massachusetts Mr. Eaton, he got rave reviews from the elementary teachers for his ability to reach, mentor, and keep engaged some of the "harder to reach students" ALL DAY!! We all left exhausted but happy! AP Enivornmental Science went to Deer Island today with Ms. Reid! The Eastie APES students did a BioStudy of our local Eastie Farm - and then planted garlic for next year's crop. Ms. Reid's AP Environmental Science class went to Spectacle Island to test water. Ms. Reid's physics class had a great time at the Museum of Science! A huge THANK YOU to the New England Aquarium and the Zephyr Education Foundation for taking us on a 2 hour Science Cruise on May 14th! We were able to use an underwater video camera to see the harbor floor, a plankton net to capture plankton, temperature probes to measure temperature at different depths and use a net to look at marine organisms galore! We had the best time and learned a tremendous about Marine life in the harbor! EBHS’s biotechnology class is investigating what types of bacteria may be found on your hands before and after touching the animals in the touch tank. NEAQ invited us for a morning at the aquarium to handle the marine animals, and gather bacteria from our hands. We had a great time at the aquarium, and are currently staining and identifying the bacteria we are finding. A special thank you to the University of Hawaii GEMS grant to help purchase the needed supplies for our research. |
