We are pleased to announce the results of the BPS City-Wide Science Fair held on Saturday March 7th. Ms.Kristen Cacciatore and Ms. Amanda Dillingham brought our EBHS Award Winning Science Scholars to compete and defend their 2014 Championship Title in the BPS City-Wide Science Fair at Northeastern University. Participating students are listed below. We offer our encouragement and congratulations to our Eastie Science Teachers & Scholars. Two Eastie Science Teams won prizes and will compete at the State Science Fair in May. Peter Le and Kit Sum Li won third prize and the Navy award for their project "Does Tidal Phase Affect Water Quality In The Mystic River?" and Fatima Hashi, Julia Sariles and Alexandra Mitchell won honorable mention for their project, "Salt vs. Plants". The award-winning students will be honored at a celebratory breakfast next week. Thanks to EBHS teachers Mrs. Murray, Mr. Menkens, and Mrs. Morey, and to student teacher Katharine O'Brien for visiting the fair to support the team! Congratulations to Ms. Cacciatore, Ms. Dillingham and the entire 2015 EBHS Science Team: Salam Hasaba, Raneem Janoudi, Kevin Rivas, Junee Barber, Peter Le, Kit Sum Li, Nyles Nedd, John Lockhead, Anthony Rizzo, Fatima Hashi, Julia Sariles, Alexandra Mitchell, Walter Galdamez, Edwin Galvez & Jonathan Barillas "Class, Pride & Tradition Through Award Winning Science"

Ms. Amanda Dillingham and Vertex were featured on Eastie's website! Read on: The sound of laughter erupts in the Thomas M. Menino Vertex Learning Lab as Ms. Dillingham’s Science Fair students from East Boston High School stream in to put the finishing touches on their science fair projects. They’re part of the Science Fair Mentorship Program, one of a number of Vertex’s science education initiatives available for students in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) system, primarily East Boston High and Boston Green Academy. “It’s a place where students can come in and have an opportunity to do cutting-edge modern science that’s directly correlated with their school curriculum,” said Carl Reid, Ph.D., who heads up the lab and is also an adjunct professor of microbiology at Roxbury Community College, of the 3,000 square-foot facility. “It’s really inspiring,” said Karen, director of Clinical Operations, who has met weekly with her mentees since early October and has been continually impressed by their enthusiasm and skill. “I feel very proud of them, and I feel proud to be a part of getting them to the next level.” The goal of the program is to inspire scientific inquiry and encourage students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. “Everybody who likes science and who doesn’t know exactly what they want to do should come to Vertex,” said Steven Toro, currently a junior at EBHS, who became involved with the Learning Lab as a summer intern through Mayor Walsh’s Summer Jobs Program. He has worked with scientists in the lab, and has learned plenty about how the company operates. “Every single section of Vertex revolves around science,” He noted. "Class, Pride & Tradition Through Award Winning Science" Two of our Enrichment Program leaders, Mrs. Morey and Ms. Dillingham attended the awards reception ceremony for a new Massachusetts Life Science Center (MLSC) grant!
Thanks to the generosity of MLSC we will be able to make our science program even more amazing! We are truly grateful to their contributions. We are so excited to have our new Vernier equipment purchased through MLSC funding!! This month in AP Bio we are focusing on how negative feedback regulates homeostasis. Currently, we are researching sugar regulation in the body and how artificial sweeteners are used as sugar substitutes because of their lower caloric content. This week in our class we are designing experiments to investigate how well yeast ferment artificial sweeteners compared to glucose and sucrose. Students are using their LabQuests and carbon dioxide probes to measure the rates of sugar fermentation in yeast. Stay tuned for results…
